Motivation Through Music

We teach and we show and we hope our lessons set in no matter how small or big they are... Today during our final post testing on the standing broad jump, the girls were spent; they had sprinted a mile, and had performed max squats in a minute. Their legs were pretty much toast. (Not the best planning on my part but we had limited time.) They were getting frustrated because they were all coming short of even their pre-testing jumps from weeks ago. I explained to them why and that the first time they jumped they were fresh and strong and now they were tired, but they wanted to keep trying just making their legs more tired and thus frustrating them further... Just by chance, a coach in the gym turned on some music and it happened to be a great song blasting through the gym. The athlete said "I love this song" and as she started singing, something triggered her and this time when she jumped, she not only met but bypassed her first time jump by two inches! Then she said, I just waited until the beat dropped and then jumped! And boy did she. 7ft 2inches! The next girl went, same result two inches more; next girl same!

“The athlete said "I love this song" and as she started singing, something triggered her and this time when she jumped, she not only met but bypassed her first time jump by two inches!”

Just so happens that during this week's Monday Motivation we talked about having a personal and team theme song and how music can spark emotion and motivate you from a neuroscience level and get your head and brain in a different frame of mind - and totally by luck today I got to prove just how that works. The amazement on their faces when I refreshed their memories about our lesson earlier this week was priceless! I so love teachable moments like this!
